Ravenous means extremely hungry or starved, so in this case it could be a reference to the knights and their hunger.

I did a little research on Richard II and discovered that he was king of England in a very troubled time of both starvation and rebellion.

So ravenous could be used to symbolize the conditions in England at that time.
